The Family History of Jesus the Messiah(Lk. 3:23b-38)1 1This is the family history of Jesus Christ. He came from the family of Davidb and from the family of Abrahamc.
| 2Abraham was the father of Isaac.
Isaac was the father of Jacobd.
Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.
3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah. (Their mother was Tamar.)
Perez was the father of Hezron.
Hezron was the father of Ram.
4Ram was the father of Amminadab.
Amminadab was the father of Nahshon.
Nahshon was the father of Salmon.
5Salmon was the father of Boaz. (His mother was Rahab.)
Boaz was the father of Obed. (His mother was Ruth.)
Obed was the father of Jesse.
6Jesse was the father of King David.
David was the father of Solomon. (His mother had been Uriah's wife.)
7Solomon was the father of Rehoboam.
Rehoboam was the father of Abijah.
Abijah was the father of Asa.
8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat.
Jehoshaphat was the father of Jehoram.
Jehoram was the father of Uzziah.
9Uzziah was the father of Jotham.
Jotham was the father of Ahaz.
Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.
10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh.
Manasseh was the father of Amon.
Amon was the father of Josiah.
11Josiah was the grandfather of Jehoiachine and his brothers, who lived during the time that the people were taken away to Babylon.
12After they were taken to Babylon:
Jehoiachin was the father of Shealtiel.
Shealtiel was the grandfather of Zerubbabel.
13Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud.
Abiud was the father of Eliakim.
Eliakim was the father of Azor.
14Azor was the father of Zadok.
Zadok was the father of Achim.
Achim was the father of Eliud.
15Eliud was the father of Eleazar.
Eleazar was the father of Matthan.
Matthan was the father of Jacob.
16Jacob was the father of Joseph.
Joseph was the husband of Mary,
and Mary was the mother of Jesus, who is called the Messiah. | |
17So there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David. There were also fourteen generations from David until the people were taken away to Babylon. And there were fourteen more from the time the people were taken to Babylon until the Messiah was born.
The Birth of Jesus the Messiah(Lk. 2:1-7) 18This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiaha happened. His mother Mary was engaged to marry Joseph. But before they married, he learned that she was expecting a baby. (She was pregnant by the power of the Holy Spiritf.) 19Mary's husband, Joseph, was a good man. He did not want to cause her public disgrace, so he planned to divorce her secretly.
20But after Joseph thought about this, an angel from the Lord came to him in a dream. The angel said, "Joseph, son of Davidg, don't be afraid to accept Mary to be your wife. The baby inside her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son. You will name him Jesush. Give him that name because he will save his people from their sins."
22All this happened to make clear the full meaning of what the Lord said through the propheti: 23"The virginj will be pregnant and will give birth to a son. They will name him Immanuel."k (Immanuel means "God with us.")
24When Joseph woke up, he did what the Lord's angel told him to do. He married Mary. 25But Joseph did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And he named him Jesus.
aMessiah A Hebrew word that has the same meaning as the Greek word Christ (see “Christ”). It was a title for the kings of God’s people in the Old Testament and for the special king God promised to send as a “savior” to defeat evil and establish the reign of God. Many prophets made it clear that this new kingdom would be eternal; that is, not only would the promised Messiah bring about a time of justice and right living among God’s people here on earth, but also his kingdom would extend beyond this world to life forever with God. However, most Jews of the first century expected the Messiah to be a political ruler here on earth who would defeat the other nations and return the nation of Israel to a position of great glory and power. But God intended his Messiah to establish a new “Israel,” an eternal kingdom that would bless all the nations.
bDavid Israel’s greatest king, who ruled about 1000 years before Christ. Besides being a great military and political leader, he was a deeply spiritual man and a gifted musician, who wrote many of the Psalms. He made plans and arrangements for the building of the first Temple in Jerusalem (“the city of David”), which was actually completed by his son Solomon. The Scriptures said that a descendant of David would be God’s chosen messiah (king), who would establish an eternal kingdom. For that reason, Jesus is sometimes called “the Son of David.”
cAbraham The most respected ancestor of the Jewish people. Through him God promised to make a great nation and bless all the people of the earth. Read Gen. 12:1-3.
dJacob Or “Israel,” ancestor of the people of Israel (also called Israelites and, later, Jews). See Gen. 32:24-28 for the story of how Jacob was given the name Israel. He was the father of twelve sons from whom the twelve tribes of Israel descended, and the name Jacob continued to be used for the nation or people of Israel.
e1:11 Jehoiachin Literally, “Jechoniah,” another name for Jehoiachin.
fHoly Spirit Also called the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, and the Comforter. In union with God and Christ, he does God’s work among people in the world.
gson of David Any person from the family of David. See “David.”
h1:21 Jesus The name Jesus means “the Lord (Yahweh) saves.”
iprophet A person who speaks a message from God. Many of the books in the Old Testament are messages spoken or written by “the prophets,” who were some of those God chose to speak for him. God often used dreams or visions to tell or show his prophets what they should say.
jvirgin A woman, especially a young woman, who is not married and has never had sexual relations.
