V: Today’s Power for Today author tells us exactly what Christ did for us.
D: Really?
V: Yes. He quotes from the letter of 1 Peter in the Bible, and says that this is the “atonement in a nutshell.”
D: ”Atonement” is another way of saying the method of payment for sins.
V: A “nutshell” is a small thing. So he is saying that Peter uses just a few words to talk about the big concept of atonement.
D: Well said. No one of us has enough “merit” or value to pay for our own sins.
V: Right. It is like having just one won, and we owe 100 million won.
D: Good illustration. That is why God appointed Jesus to pay the penalty for us.
V: The payment was his death in place of ours. I cannot begin to imagine the suffering.
D: The author also reminds us that this gift for us is freely “bestowed”(which means given).
V: He says that it is free, but it does have a condition.
D: What condition is that?
V: The gift of salvation is free, on the condition that we accept the gift in faith.
D: And here the “faith” means that we trust the Lord to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.
V: Today’s message is a big one in a “nutshell.”
D: And our time together is always just a “nutshell.” I’ll see you tonight.

| 그리스도께서 한번에 모두를 위해 죽으심 |

비키: 오늘 자 '오늘의 능력' 작가는 예수께서 우리를 위해 하신 일을 정확히 말하고 있네요.
단: 정말이에요?
비키: 그래요. 작가는 성경의 베드로전서를 인용했는데, 간단히 말해 '속죄'지요.
단: 'Atonement'는 다른 말로 하면 죄의 대가를 치르는 방법이지요.
비키: 'Nutshell'은 작은 물건을 말하지요. 즉, 작가는 '속죄'라는 큰 개념에 대해 베드로가 단지 몇 마디의 말로 간단히 표현했다고 말하고 있어요.
단: 맞는 말이에요. 우리들 중 스스로의 죄를 갚을 만한 가치를 가진 사람은 아무도 없어요.
비키: 그렇지요. 마치 우리가 일억 원의 빚을 지고 있는 데 가진 것은 고작 일원인 것과 마찬가지에요.
단: 좋은 예예요. 그것이 하나님께서 우리의 벌금을 물리기 위해 예수를 지목하신 이유지요.
비키: 우리를 대신해서 지불된 것은 예수의 죽음이었어요. 그 고통은 상상하기조차 힘들어요.
단: 작가는 또 이런 선물이 우리에게 대가없이 주어진다는 것을 상기시키네요.
비키: 이것은 대가없이 주어지지만 조건이 있다지요.
단: 무슨 조건이죠?
비키: 구원의 선물은 대가없이 주어지지요 그러나 우리가 그 선물을 믿음으로 받아들여야 한다는 조건이 있지요.
단: 여기에 '믿음'의 의미는 우리가 스스로를 위해 할 수 없는 것을 하나님께서 우리를 위하여 하셨다는 것을 믿는 것이지요.
비키: 오늘 본문이 전하고자 하는 것은 작은 것 속에 있는 큰 것이군요.
단: 우리가 함께 하는 시간은 항상 너무 짧아요. 저녁에 만나요.
